Whether you are traveling from Dublin Airport, Cork Airport, Shannon Airport or any Irish Airport we would highly recommend you include a trip to Clifden while in Ireland, it's a small route and could easily be completed in a day when travelling from Galway City.

We would begin by suggesting you hire a car from Car Rental Ireland, this will give you the freedom to travel this route at your own pace and you won't have to rely on public transport.

Clifden, the largest town in Connemara, is nestled between the Twelve Bens mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of Clifden Bay. The area is known for its rich landscape and heritage. Clifden has an impact on all who visit. It is a charming little town, with something to suit everyone. It’s a colourful town, literally, each shop front is painted a different colour to bring the town alive. Whatever your taste in a holiday, whether it’s a relaxing retreat or an action-packed activity holiday, Clifden is an ideal spot to base yourself while exploring the region. During the summer when the sun is shining against all the colourful shops and there live music leaking out onto the street – there is nothing quite like it, it’s like being in a real-life fairy-tale.

The Sky Road in Clifden is one of the number one tourist attractions in the entire Connemara region. The circular route is just 11km long and takes you out west from Clifden. Simply put, the scenery along the Sky Road is out of this world. When we say there’s nothing like it, we mean it! Very few places in Ireland can match the rugged beauty and range of scenery that can be seen from the Sky Road.

As you travel away from Clifden, the Sky Road separates into the lower and upper roads. The lower road will give you a very close-up view of the landscape, but the upper road is most popular because it offers views of the entire area. There is a car park at the highest point of the road with plenty of room to park up your rental car and take pictures.

If you are looking for something a little different to do in Clifden, you should visit Eyrephort beach. This beach is a hidden gem that not many people know about and is a favourite of the locals, as it holds fond childhood memories for many. It is a little off the beaten track, but trust us if you are looking for a quiet beach, with tons of scenery and with a little privacy then you are in the right spot. It’s the perfect spot for losing yourself in a book, or in the beautiful views around you, so kick back with a book and take in the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. It is also a great spot for children, they’ll get a kick out of exploring this hidden beach and looking for pretty and unusual rocks and shells.
